September 2, 1925 - February 5, 2023

With profound sorrow we announce the death of James Charles Smith, a proud Canadian, devoted husband, father, step-father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Jim was predeceased by his beloved wife Dorothea Hanlon (1969), sons Dr. Bryan Smith (Anne), Glenn and stepson Peter. He is survived by his beloved wife of fifty years Patricia Healey-Smith, sons Jeffrey (Teresa) and Steven, stepsons Michael, Scott, David and stepdaughter Andrea, 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, ten step-grandchildren and 13 step great-grandchildren.

LGen Smith enrolled in the RCAF as an Air Gunner in 1943 and was employed in flying duties in Canada and U.K. until released in 1946 as a Flight-Lieutenant. LGen Smith was a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan, the RAF Staff College and the National Defence College. Over the course of his career he served in several senior posts. Promoted to LGen in 1977, he was named ADM (Per) and he retired from the Regular Force in 1981. Since his retirement, he was Associate ADM Veterans Affairs (1981-84) and Assistant Secretary to the Treasury Board (1984-88).

In retirement Jim enjoyed world travels with Patricia, golf at the Royal Ottawa Golf Club, skiing with friends and family and daily walks with the dogs. Most of all, he enjoyed fun times shared with family. A celebration of life with family will be held in the spring.
