It is with sadness that we announce the passing of loving husband and devoted father, Jack Vanderhoek, age 71 on February 12, 2025. He slipped away peacefully at home with family nearby. His wife Ena Dasberg and son Jon will miss him very much.
Jack was a retired letter-carrier who loved nature and the outdoors. You could find him hiking, biking, in his kayak or exploring new terrain. He was known for his sense of adventure, clever word play, warmth and humour. Jack was intensely curious, an avid reader and self-educated on a variety of subjects. He could be a competitive Risk player.
He leaves behind his brothers Ralph (Robin), Richard (Loretta), James, his sister Alida (Mike) and mother Barteldina. He is predeceased by his father Anton and his sister-in-law Bonnie Gerlitz. He is also missed by his sister-in-law Alice Hayes, brothers-in-law James Dasberg (Karen) and Craig Gerlitz. He is fondly remembered by many nephews, nieces and cousins on both sides of the family. His sudden passing is mourned by his friend Pat Grist (Debbie) and the "extended Miller family." He believed friends are the family you choose and claimed them as such.
Jack lived his life with grace and even in illness could find the humour in most situations. He made a positive impact in many of our lives.
Visitation will be held at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Road, Ottawa on Thursday February 20th from 10 -11. This will be followed by a Celebration of Life and a light lunch will be offered after.
In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Children at Risk would be appreciated by the family.
