Hugh Carroll

Hugh Evans Carroll, at 89, passed away peacefully at the Ruddy Shenkman Hospice in Kanata on Saturday March 30, 2024.

Hugh was born in Glace Bay Nova Scotia and lived there until moving to Ottawa in 1960. There he met the love of his life, Caroline (Carol) Gallant in 1962 and they were married in September of 1963. Beloved father of Breton (Gillian), Allison (Randall) Gibson and Michael (Donna Lee). Sadly missed by grandchildren Kahlan, Kyle, Chloe, Patrick (Jaimie), and great grandchildren Hailey and Madison. Hugh will be fondly remembered by extended family and many friends.

Predeceased by his parents Evans and Lexina Carroll and siblings Virginia (Myles) Doody, Peggy (Carl) Dubicki and John (Patricia and survived by Noreen).

He received his Electrical Engineering Degree in 1960 from Nova Scotia Technical College which is now part of Dalhousie University. During his summers off from University, Hugh was proud to serve his country in the Canadian Officers Training Corps.

He was a member of the Professional Engineers of Ontario and had a long career as a Federal Public Servant, in the Department of Transport and the Canadian Coast Guard. He had many interesting stories of travelling across Canada and to the far north during his career. After retiring from the federal government, he and Carol spent winters in Florida, where they enjoyed time on the golf course with their many friends.

Cape Breton was always close to his heart, and he had a soft spot for fiddle music. He also loved a good joke and had a mischievous twinkle in his eye when telling one.

Visitation will be held at Tubman Funeral Home, The Garden Chapel, 3440 Richmond Road, Ottawa on Wednesday April 10, 2024, from 6pm to 9pm. Funeral service will take place at Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church, 1489 Shea Road, Stittsville on Thursday April 11, 2024 at 11am. Following the service, family and friends are invited to a reception at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Ruddy Shenkman Hospice or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.
