Harold (Hal) Alvin Monkhouse passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on August 19 2023 at the Ottawa Hospital in Ottawa.
The son of Harold and Hazel (née Henigar) Monkhouse, he was predeceased by his brother Leonard (May), he is survived by his beloved wife Eileen, his children David and the late Richard, his step children Elizabeth (Adam) Carolyn(Tom) and Laura (Giuseppe), his grandchildren Maximilian (Teresa), Willem, Michael (Amy), Marie (Jason), Brandy (Greg), Julie (Michael), Salvatore (Shawna), Jessica (Matthew) Marco (Cynthia), as well as loving relationships with his great-grandchildren.
Born in Chiliwack, British Columbia in 1929, Hal served in the Canadian military in various locations in Canada and Europe before he settled in Ottawa in the early 1960s. He enjoyed many sports like volleyball, skiing, canoeing (although he wouldn’t tolerate any boat rocking), cycling and running. He was also active tidying up his neighbourhood of Wellington West on his many walks. He was very devoted to his family particularly his wife Eileen. Hal was beloved by his family for his helpful advice and guidance, generosity and gentle wit and his sometimes cranky but amusing observations about modern life.
The family also wants to acknowledge the help of their kind neighbours who were always ready to help with Hal at a moment’s notice at all hours of the day. We also want to thank the compassionate staff at the Ottawa hospital and the health care professionals that were involved in his ongoing health.
Hal will be greatly missed.
