McBean, George Bernard “Geordie”
July 28, 1929 – June 30, 2022 (age 92)
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of George “Geordie” Bernard McBean in Ottawa on Thursday June 30th at the age of 92 years. He passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family. George was the beloved husband of Florence (nee Chisholm) and loving father to Caroline (Paul Tracey), Joanne (Greg Wilson), Ian, Peggy (Ed Persico), Leah (Eric Benazet), George, Patricia (Rick Cloutier) and Michaela (Andrew MacDonald). Cherished Pop to Anne Marie, Christina, Ian, Siobhan, Matthew, Alexander, Douglas, Ella, Sophie, Michael, Maggie, Nicole, Aubrey, Kieran, Ewen, Duncan, Mary Jane and Grace. Son of the late George and Marguerite (nee McDonald) McBean of Bainsville, Ontario. Predeceased by his sister Patricia (Don McRae, deceased), and brothers infant George, Douglas (Florence, deceased), Billy (Anita, deceased), Earl, John (Edna, deceased), Duncan (Anne, deceased), and Archie (Mary Catherine). George will be sadly missed by his many nieces and nephews.
George was born and raised on the family farm in Bainsville, Ontario and remained close to his Glengarry roots throughout his life. After high school, he worked on the family farm before becoming a mechanic with Godsall Equipment. He spent his working life in heavy equipment sales and service employed primarily by Capital Equipment Ltd. as the Sales Manager for Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. George was respected by his customers in the construction industry, many of whom became lifelong friends.
George was, above all, a family man. He was Florence’s loving and supportive husband of 62 years, a true gentleman, and the backbone of our family. Raising eight children, George was happiest when he was holding a newborn baby, tying our skates at the local rink, firing up the ski-doo for hours of winter fun, keeping our mini-bike in working order, loading us into our station wagon for weekends in Glengarry or a road trip to Florida, and listening to music, especially Tom T. Hall and George Jones. George was devoted to, and actively involved with his grandchildren and supported them in all of their endeavours. He especially loved being surrounded by his children and grandchildren at our frequent family gatherings, filled with laughter and music. In his later years he looked forward to spending the winter season with Florence in Naples, Florida where they enjoyed visits from family and daily walks on the beach.
George was a gifted mechanic and an avid problem solver who was always ready to lend a hand or an ear. He had a wonderful sense of humour. Although never seeking the spotlight, he entertained us with his engaging storytelling and a ready wit, which we savoured even in his final days.
Our father was our calm and steady role model whose example will continue to guide us in the years ahead. He was true to his Catholic faith, and we were humbled by his grace up to his final hours. His legacy of commitment to family is alive and well in his children and grandchildren. Thank you Daddy, for everything.
George’s family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the many healthcare professionals who cared for George: Dr. Tim Capello, Dr. Marino Labinaz, Dr. Kamla Swami, Nurse Derrick, Art Flores, Irena, Sugre, Nadie, Lola, Amina, Sada, Olu. A special thank you to family friend Pauline Balbuena for her ongoing support.
