George Carr

Carr, George

June 5,1923 – July 20, 2020

Our family will dearly miss our patriarch George Carr. RCAF Lt. Colonel (Retired), WWII Veteran, Canadian Forces' Decoration. Born and raised in Toronto, Ontario. George was a strong and well-respected figure in our family and community.

Loving husband to Ann Carr. Adored father of Christine (Bob), Cynthia (Frank), Russell (Lynda), Maureen (Peter) and Matthew. Grandad to Charlotte, Heather, Eileen, Courtney (Teddy), Christopher (Gwyn), Andrew (Melissa), Sophia, Bridgette, Ronan and Audrey. Great Grandad to Nathan, Chloe, Rosalie, Ella, Scarlett, Jameson, Ty, Ryan and Emie. George was predeceased by parents Ernest and Ethel, and Nina Russell his wife of 13 years.

In the spring of 1942, at 19 he enlisted in the Canadian Army and trained as an officer; this additional training delayed his deployment before the war ended. George graduated as a Professional Engineer from the University of Toronto in Mechanical Engineering and completed post-graduate education at University of Michigan in Aeronautical Engineering. George had a long career in the military and public service where he lived and worked in the USA and Canada in many cooperative projects between the two governments. 35 years CAF military service. 22 years public service in DSS and DND. He was a guided missile specialist and worked on many projects including F-111, F-5/CF-5D/CF-5, CP-140 Aurora, and CF-18. George loved the camaraderie of military life and had a vast knowledge of military history and aviation.

George met his wife of 53 years Ann, a nurse in the USAF, while based at the Wright Patterson Airforce base. They married and moved back to Ottawa, Canada to establish a permanent base and raise 5 children. George loved to read to and teach his kids after dinner. He raised his children to be independent and forge their own path in life. He instilled the love of the outdoors and fitness on his children.

George taught us the value of working hard, the bond of family and approaching life with faith and humour. He built a large family and enjoyed the company of many friends. He loved a night of dancing and enjoyed many nights of playing cards with friends. He picked himself up from the challenges of life and kept going forward. He lived with integrity and discipline to build an honest and good life. Thanks Dad you were one in a million.
