Frederick Ermuth

September 1, 1942 — January 10, 2017

Ermuth, Frederick

1942-2017 The man who planted trees and moved rocks died peacefully, surrounded by family, on January 10 at the age of 74. A wonderful husband to Christine, dad to Roger, Michele and Pam and Opa to his eight grandchildren, Fred’s big heart, keen intellect and quick wit will be sorely missed. Fred was born in Berlin, Germany and immigrated to Canada at the age of 18 armed with a paper mache suitcase and a desire for self improvement. Fuelled by an unflinching thirst for knowledge (and a few grilled cheese sandwiches from the airport), Fred embraced life as a Canadian, thriving in his new homeland. Fred met Christine on a ski hill near Toronto. She laughed while he somersaulted down the slopes and he immediately fell in love with the woman who would accompany him on the many adventures life had to offer, challenge him when necessary and above all love him unconditionally. A scholar, outdoorsman and renaissance man, Fred found pleasure whether listening to Beethoven, paddling through Algonquin Park, engaging in spirited debates or unwinding at the cottage. Prone to enthusiasms, Fred excelled at many of the hobbies and athletic endeavors he pursued (the less successful ones simply provided fodder for his wonderful self-deprecating humour). Fred started to leave us eight years ago, although he remained happy throughout his journey with dementia, never ceasing to whistle a tune or offer a smile to those around him. Our sincere thanks to the staff at Longfields. Thank you in particular to the nursing staff and the PSWs who cared for Fred with such kindness and the Activities Department who did so much to brighten Fred’s days. The family will celebrate his life and love of nature at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please perform an act of kindness to welcome someone who has recently made Fred’s beloved Canada their new home. As Fred always said: “Life is not a problem to be solved, but a riddle to be lived."
