Frederick Herbert Alexander Campbell
03/02/1944 - 11/02/2015
Fred died peacefully at the Central West Hospice after a yearlong battle with esophageal cancer at home. He will be deeply missed by his loving wife and life partner Kadri (nee Oolo), children Roy Alexander Campbell (Karen Andrews) and Linda Lois Campbell Rehmann (Richard Rehmann), grandchildren Alex, Becca, & Ben Campbell and Erin & Jack Rehmann, Rachael Maloof and Alee Andrews, as well as many other family, friends, and colleagues. He was the only child of Roy Campbell (d. 1960) and Lois Spencer Campbell (d. 1977).
Fred was born in Manitoba but grew up on Air Force bases in every province but PEI. He attended high school in Kingston, Nova Scotia before earning Bachelor of Science and Master of Science Degrees in geology at King's College and Dalhousie Universities in Halifax. After obtaining his doctorate degree from the University of Manitoba, Fred went on to a distinguished career with the Geological Survey of Canada which included many long summers of field work in the Northwest Territories, leading to a lifelong aversion to camping and hiking. He then worked with the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing, initiating, managing and coordinating the GlobeSAR program throughout South America and Asia.. In retirement since 1998, he continued working internationally as a consultant, including time as a visiting professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing and coordinating the Argentina Brazil Canada China (ABCC) program.
Fred was an avid woodworker, builder, traveler, and advisor to all takers. He enjoyed futzing on the boat on the Big Rideau, tearing things apart and putting them back together again (but better), and in general knowing at least a little bit about pretty much everything and a lot about a lot of things. He was instrumental in forming the Munster Minor Hockey and Soccer Associations in the early 1970's, and enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play both. He was, at various times, a musician, an artist, a photographer, a designer, an engineer, but above all a caring husband, father, grandfather, and friend. As his telling last act, he donated his body to the School of Anatomy at the University of Ottawa.
The family would like to extend sincere thanks to Drs. Dennis, Cripps, Nixon and Hacker, and to visiting nurses Virginia and colleagues at Carefor. Finally, to the staff at Central West Hospice for his last week with us. Visitation will take place on Monday, March 2 from 2pm to 4pm at the Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Rd. There will be a Celebration of Life that evening at the same location from 6pm to 8pm, with toasts welcome beginning at 7:15. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Hospice Care Ottawa or the Charity of your choice.
