FINNIE, Frank Chester

March 25, 1916 - July 2, 2018

Peacefully at Windsor Park Manor in Ottawa at the age of 102. Born in Salisbury England, son of Roy Chester Finnie and Genevieve Louise (Tomney) Finnie. Frank's father was born in Arnprior, Ontario and served in WW1 with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps from 1915-1919. His mother was from Saint John, New Brunswick and went overseas to be with Roy Chester Finnie. Frank was the oldest brother of the "Four Fighting Finnie's". In August 1941, Frank enlisted in the RCAF in Ottawa, Ontario. First, he served in various units in Canada in RCAF Administration. Later he was attached to No. 168 Transport Squadron, which was flying C47 Douglas Dakota aircraft. Eventually, he was posted overseas to the Royal Air Force (RAF) base at Biggin Hill outside London where he served as a crew man and also served in Administration. Sergeant Finnie received an honourable discharge from the RCAF in 1945. Postwar, Frank worked for the Canadian Government as a diplomat in Russia and India. During his posting in Moscow, he met his future wife, Winifred Hilda Barnes. In 1962, Win and Frank were married at All Saints Anglican Church in Westboro, Ottawa. Frank continued working with the Canadian Government until he retired. He and Win were highly involved volunteering in various programs in the Anglican Church and passionate about the music and arts community. Predeceased by brothers Jim (2017), King (2015), and Don (2006). Predeceased by his beloved wife Winifred Hilda (Barnes) Finnie (2014). Visitation will be held at the Westboro Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 403 Richmond Road (at Roosevelt) on Saturday July 14, 2018 from 9 am until the time of service which will be held at the Chapel at 10 am, followed by a reception.
