Frances Hampson

February 16, 1926 — October 3, 2021

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Frances Eleanor Hampson on 3 October 2021. Born in Windsor Nova Scotia on 16 February 1926, Frances was the eldest child of Charles Lawrence Roach and his wife Agnes Ellis Roach (nee Pearson). She was predeceased by her sister Mary Elizabeth (1930-2006) and is survived by her brother William (Mary Ellen). Frances was part of a large extended family in Nova Scotia that included many founding families around Windsor.

Frances married the love of her life, Col David Victor Hampson, OMM, CD in 1952 and settled into life as a military wife. In due process, 2 sons arrived, John Lawrence (Susan) in 1956 and James Alexander in 1958. For many years, Frances and her family had the opportunities to live in quite a variety of places including Ghana, United Kingdom, Germany, United States and many places in Canada including Wainwright, Suffield, Calgary, Montreal and Ottawa. Over the course of time Frances was blessed with 3 grandchildren- Kimberly, David and Karen (Alex) as well as 2 great grandchildren- Riley and Aleysha. Frances was a formidable life force, whose enjoyment of life showed in all she did and all she accomplished. Her family loves her dearly and will miss her very much.

Frances’ interests were as fascinating as she was. She loved the game of Bridge and even at 92 was still at the top of her game. She loved travel and was fortunate to travel on some great adventures such as cruising the Panama Canal, visiting the Opera House in Manaus Brazil, travelling the Trans-Siberian train to Hong Kong, and enjoying a trip on the Blue Train in South Africa to name just a few.

Having been the daughter, wife, and mother to Engineers, all of whom served in various capacities in the military, another passion of Frances’ was the welfare and benefit of military wives in Canada, particularly wives of engineers. As such Fran was a past president of the Ottawa chapter of the Engineer Wives Association.

In her final years, Frances made her home at Redwoods Retirement Residence and her family wishes to thank the staff of Redwoods for their impeccable care and caring.
