Peacefully with family by his side on October 15, 2023, in his 99th year. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Lorna (McArthur). Loyal father to Patricia Conroy (Colin) and David Nugent (Susan). Grandfather to Liam Conroy, Mark, and Katharine Nugent. He will be fondly remembered by surviving siblings Dorothy Monette (late Donald) of Calgary Alberta and Roy (Edith) Nugent of Luskville Quebec. Predeceased by brothers Bob (Elaine) and Glen (Beatrice) Nugent and survived by many nieces and nephews.
Born in North Onslow Quebec to Annie May (Dowd) and Robert Horace Nugent. As the eldest of five siblings living through the Great Depression, he sacrificed his education to help run the family farm. By his twenties he had left farming to purse an apprenticeship as a Beekeeper in Pensacola Florida. He returned to Ottawa where he met his beloved wife and started a family. With her tutoring assistance he obtained a trades education and spent the next 37 years working as a devoted employee with Computing Devices Canada in Bells Corners.
Errol supported his children to develop interest in sports and music. He bravely drove his family throughout North America on many camping trips. As a refined craftsman, he sharpened skates for many of the most talented figure skaters in Ottawa and Nepean. During his lengthy retirement, he traveled to Florida each winter in his van and trailer. His more adventuresome travels included Europe, Thailand, Bali, Japan, and Galapagos Islands. He spent many hours dancing at the RA centre and served as past president of the Ballroom Dance Club. He is best known for being able to build, fix, or invent anything he needed and his fiercely independent nature led him in many unconventional directions.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Trent Valley Lodge in Trenton ON for their dedicated and compassionate care in his final months.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 21st from 10:00 to 11:00 am at the Westboro Chaple, Tubman Funeral Homes, 403 Richmond Road, Ottawa, followed by a brief service and burial at Pinecrest Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Errol’s memory may be made to Trinty United Church (https://www.trinityunitedottawa.ca/Donate/) or Parkinson Canada.
