Ellen Cumpotey

June 21, 1921 — March 17, 2016

After a short illness and hospitalization, Ellen Lawson passed away peacefully in the Civic Hospital on Thursday, March 17, 2016. She leaves her beloved daughter Janis (Don Dalziel) and brother-in-law Paul F. D'Hondt of Windsor, ON. She was predeceased by her much-loved husband Jack (John James), by her parents William Alexander Cumpotey and Ellen Cumpotey (nee Pugh), and by her sister Marjorie Cumpstey. Ellen was born in Birkenhead, UK. As a young girl, she emigrated with her family to Windsor, ON, but they returned to the UK just prior to WWII. During the war, Ellen served in the Women's Land Army, and met Jack, who was coincidently from Windsor, and serving with a Canadian Army Armoured Reconnaissance Unit. After the war, they married and settled in Windsor. Jack began his career with the Post Office, and Ellen trained as a legal secretary. They moved to Ottawa, but returned to Windsor on Jack's retirement from the Post Office. After Jack's death, Ellen moved back to Ottawa and joined Janis and Don in their home for almost 15 years. Janis and Don would like to thank our family and many friends and neighbours who have offered really-appreciated thoughts and condolences. We offer particular gratitude to Dr. Christine Rivet of the Civic Hospital Academic Family Health Team, who was Ellen's family doctor for many, many years. As well, our thanks to Dr. Frank Molnar and the Medical and Nursing team at the Geriatric Assessment Unit at the Civic Hospital, for their gentle and wonderfully compassionate care. All the Tubman Funeral Homes staff have been particularly helpful. Internment will take place later in the spring. Ellen's favourite charities were The Shepherds of Good Hope Foundation and the Ottawa Hospital Foundation. A funeral service will be held at the Westboro Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at 11 a.m.
