CAMERON, Eion Matheson
1933-2014
On May 30, Eion passed away peacefully at home near Carp in the company of his beloved wife, Anne, cherished daughters Nairne and Lesley, and grandchildren Mia and Cameron John. Son of the late Robert and Katherine (Matheson) Cameron, Eion leaves behind son-in-law Vlad, brother-in-law John W. C. Macfarlane and wife Carol, nieces Josie Bohm (Colin) and Sarah (Jeff Lu). He will be remembered by his five cousins in Scotland: John (Jennifer), Donald, Christine, Aileen (Mike), and Donald (Rene).
Before graduating from the University of Manchester (Ph.D.), Eion had climbed most of the mountain peaks in the UK. Joining the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) in 1957, he was appointed Head of the Applied Geochemistry Section in 1966, focussing on exploration geochemistry.
Eion took part in the first major survey of water sampling and analysis in the Canadian Shield, utilizing helicopter-supported geochemical reconnaissance over a 36,000 square mile area. In 1980, he returned to basic sedimentary geochemistry studies which held special interest for him. Eion was an adjunct professor at the University of Ottawa between 1983 and 2000, where he received NSERC operating grants to support M.Sc. and Ph.D. students. He was the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Geochemical Exploration, 1972-1997. Upon retirement from the GSC, he headed a CAMIRO Deep-Penetrating Geochemistry project, and continued as an active researcher.
Eion had a passion for cars, Formula One and soccer. He was a man of wit, an avid reader, most keenly interested in world affairs. Eion greatly enjoyed time spent on the family bush property, walking, cross-country skiing and caring for its' trails.
Eion's ashes will be buried at the Tomnahurich Cemetery, Inverness, Scotland. A private celebration of his life will take place at his home "Achnacarry". Special thanks to Dr. K. Dennis, Dr. R. Stecher, CCAC, and nurses, especially June Wilson, and to the Queensway Carleton and Riverside Hospital medical teams.
