Dr. Gordon Anthony

Surrounded by love, Gordon passed away peacefully on June 8, 2019 at Élizabeth Bruyére Hospital in Ottawa, Ontario. Gordon was loved by his family. Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life is his wife of 61 years, Sylvia (nee Martin) and his children Lynne, Gaye Dicks (John), Greg (Mary Lynn), Doug (Melissa), Karen McNaughton (Bruce) and Lisa (deceased). Gordon was Poppy to and deeply loved by his grandchildren: Christian Murphy; Emma Dicks; Kaylyn Anthony, Noah Anthony, Marcie Bruce (Johnny) and Charlotte Jenkins; Matthew, Claire and William Anthony; Owen and Sarah McNaughton; and his great-grandchild Lauren Bruce.
Born and raised in Newfoundland by his parents William and Elizabeth (nee Osmond), Gordon was an avid athlete in track, soccer, hockey and golf. Gordon attended Memorial University and Dalhousie University where he graduated in 1959 from the Faculty of Dentistry. Gordon practiced dentistry in Corner Brook and St. John’s until he retired in 1998. Gordon was proud to be a dentist and served the profession through his participation on both provincial and national boards.
Gordon was an active member of the community in St. John’s. He was a long time member of the Rotary Club of St. John’s Northwest, serving as President of the Club in 1970-71 and serving as District Governor of Rotary District 7820 in 1976-77 and was recognized by Rotary International as a Paul Harris Fellow.
Gordon was an avid horseman and a member of the Newfoundland Trail Riders Association. He and his fellow Trail Riders would enjoy the Newfoundland outdoors together on horseback and enjoyed many memorable adventures on horseback in such places as the Canadian Rockies, Utah, Wyoming and Colorado.
Gordon’s faith was an important part of his life and he was active in his church. He attended St. Thomas Church in St. John’s where he served as the Rector’s Warden and St. Paul’s Church in Ottawa, where he was active in the men’s prayer group and community outreach.
A service celebrating Gordon’s life will occur at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, 20 Young Road in Ottawa, on Tuesday, June 11th, 2019 at 4 p.m. An internment service will follow in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador in July.
