Dr. Gita Chaudhuri of Nepean, Ontario, passed away on January 10, 2021 at 91 years of age. She was born on August 14, 1929 to Sudhir and Prativa Debmoulik in Rangpur, British India. Gita graduated from medical school in Calcutta and finished her residency training in anesthesiology in Ottawa. She was married to her best friend, Dr. Asim Kumar Chaudhuri in 1958. Gita is survived by her two daughters, Nita and Ema, their spouses, Blaise and Frank, and her four grandchildren, Maya, Devon, Leila, and Manisha. Gita was predeceased by her beloved husband who passed away in 1998.
Gita worked as a physician in Ottawa and India and was a founding member of the local Bengali Indian community, of which she has remained a member since the 1960s. She was a devoted wife and a loving mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister, neighbour and friend to those in her family and so many more. She was an intelligent, caring, and generous woman with an infectious sense of humour who touched the lives of numerous people throughout her life. She loved to listen to music, she loved to laugh, and she loved to just sit, chat, and drink tea.
She loved her grandchildren and lived every day for them.
Gita was highly respected and loved by her family, extended family in India, her colleagues and the larger Indian community of Ottawa. She lived her life with dignity
and her calmness and peaceful energy will be missed.
A memorial service for her will be held at Tubman Funeral Homes in Ottawa on Wednesday January 20. She lives on through those who she loved and loved her, but she will nonetheless be missed forever.
