It is with great sadness that the family announces his passing on August 24, 2020. He passed away peacefully at home at the age of 86 years. Monty was born December 22, 1933 to loving parents Clarence F. and Frances Wood.  Beloved husband for 57 years to Grace Wood. Loving father of Kenneth and Sheila Wood (Bernie Wynia). Proud grandfather to Andrew Wynia, uncle to Frances Wood (Serge Fenos), Patricia Chiasson (Phil Chiasson) and Karen Neill (Bill Neill) and brother to David Wood.  Monty received his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Toronto in 1956 and 1959 respectively, and his Ph.D from McMaster University in Hamilton in 1963. Monty had a long and distinguished career as a scientist and educator; he began his career researching in the arctic but later was a central figure in building and developing a biological research centre in Monteverde, Costa Rica.  He was a beloved teacher at Carleton University, where he had an enormous impact on the lives and educational journeys of several students.  Even after he retired, Monty continued working as an Honourary Research Associate at Agriculture Canada to maintain his connections with his colleagues and students. He was a keen collector, travelling extensively throughout the Americas and Australia.  He contributed tens of thousands of superbly mounted specimens to the scientific world and authored or coauthored more than 75 scientific publications.  From his early childhood, Monty had passionate interest in nature and began his collections from the age of 5.  He was also an avid birder.  Friends and family are invited to gather for a Memorial Reception at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Road (between Bayshore and Baseline Road) Nepean on September 19, 2020 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Words of Remembrance at 11:30am. Due to COVID restrictions, attendance for the reception is limited, to make a reservation please call the funeral home at 613-726-0292.  In lieu of flowers, donations to the Nature Conservancy of Canada would be appreciated.
