After a courageous battle, surrounded by the love of his family, on Monday, November 23, 2015 at the age of 76. Beloved husband of Louise. Proud father of Derek (Elzbieta) and Emily Blinn (Eric). Adoring grandfather of Olivia and Gregory Howe, Lucy and Charlotte Blinn. Dear brother of Marguerite Hemstock (late Alvin), Dorothy Needham (Jim), and Mary Armbrust (Bill). He will also be missed by several nieces and nephews, and their families. Doug had a rewarding and successful career as a High School science and outdoor education teacher with the Ottawa Board of Education for 30 years. Aside from his love of teaching, one of Doug’s greatest passions was canoeing, and leading many canoe trips to introduce hundreds of students to the great outdoors. His woodworking talents were passed onto students in evening classes in the form of paddle making. He was an avid cyclist, cross-country skier, golfer, curler, canoeist, and woodworker. With his friends and colleagues, Doug completed many editions of the Rideau Lakes Tour, skied the Canadian Ski Marathon at the Gold level several times, golfed his way through the Red Book, participated in curling bonspiels and leagues, canoed some of the great rivers of Canada's North including the Nahanni, Hanbury-Thelon, Coppermine and French rivers, and created many pieces of wood furniture. Every summer, Doug would return with his family to Port Elgin, Ontario to spend time at the family cottage on Lake Huron. Doug was known as a person who could be called upon to volunteer and lend a helping hand to anyone in need. In addition to his devotion to family and career, he was also a longtime member of Carleton Memorial United Church. Friends may call at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes,3440 Richmond Road, Nepean on Monday, November 30 th from 3:00 – 7:00 pm. A service celebrating Doug’s life will be held at Carleton Memorial United Church, 740 Melfa Crescent on Tuesday, December 1 st at 1 pm followed by a reception. For those wishing, a donation to Carleton Memorial United Church, Canadian Cancer Society or extending a helping hand to someone in need, would be appreciated.
