Douglas George Burgess

May 1, 1943 — December 18, 2024

Douglas George Burgess, aged 81, of Ottawa, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, surrounded by family. He is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Grania, his children, Paul (Roxana) and Diane, and his grandchildren, Bradley and Brittany. He is also sadly missed by his step-children, Jocelyn (Andy), Graham (Suzy), Sylvia (Bram), and four step-grandchildren.

Born in Montreal to Elaine (Sanders) and Eric Burgess, Doug travelled with his parents before settling in Ottawa. He attended Fisher Park High School — at the same time as luminaries such as Paul Anka — and graduated in 1964 from the Commerce program at Carleton University. He then became a chartered accountant working in finance for various companies including Export Development Canada and MDS Nordion. After retirement, he and Grania enjoyed joining friends and neighbours in many community activities.

He was a long-suffering fan of the Montreal Expos and Cleveland’s major teams, but also a supporter of the Ottawa 67s and the newly launched PWHL. An avid chess player, Doug was a former President of the Canadian Chess Federation and the RA Centre Chess Club. He loved animals (especially cats), BNN Market Call, and everything to do with the weather (often wistfully noting that he wished he could have been a weatherman).

At Doug’s request, only a private gathering will be held.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Ottawa Humane Society, The Ottawa Mission, or a charity of your choice, are welcomed.
