Kuntze, Douglas

1951-2019

Peacefully and surrounded by family on Monday, June 17th, 2019.  Survived by his loving wife Diane (née Beland), sons Scott (Julia) and Drew (Mary), and six beautiful grandchildren who called him “GrandDoug”.  Doug was an avid acoustic guitar and banjo player, oil painter, woodworker, and photographer.  He was truly at home in a canoe on a quiet lake with only his camera and some painting supplies.  He built his own Chestnut Prospector cedar-strip canoe – a marvel to all who saw it – which led to countless summer days paddling through Algonquin Park with his family.  He loved to work with his hands and would happily spend a weekend dismantling and reassembling a car, a cabinet, a dryer or a kitchen sink, always with CBC Radio on in the background.  He was an ideal “Hockey Dad”, driving his sons all over the region, always offering only praise and encouragement.  In spite of a strict “no dog” policy, Doug had a weakness for golden retrievers, and went soft when the right one came along.  The family fondly remembers him being hilariously pulled down the road by the first family dog, an act that cemented a lasting bond between the two.  Doug took great pride in his professional career and the deep friendships he formed with his colleagues.  With respect to Doug’s wishes, cremation has taken place.  For those wishing, a donation in Doug’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
