Horrocks - Dorothy Elizabeth (nee MacDonald)
1928-2016
The Horrocks family announces the passing of their beloved mother, Dorothy, on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at the age of 88. Survived by loving husband John, in their sixtieth year if marriage, son Andrew (Marcella and grandsons Collin, James and Timothy) and daughter Lynn, and predeceased by son Robert. She was born in Hopewell, Nova Scotia, the younger daughter of Robert Evan and Louise Esther (nee Harlow) MacDonald, survived by brother Murray and predeceased by brothers Harry, William and sister Ida.
Dorothy's life was enriched by family, friends, and service to others. In post-school days she enjoyed classical dance training in Vancouver. After marriage in Toronto and transfer to Montreal (and the arrival of children!) she worked for several years on the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Lakeshore General Hospital, on Parents' School Committees at John Rennie High School and participated in the activities of Lakeside Heights Baptist Church, Pointe Claire. After moving to Ottawa in 1992, Dorothy attended First Baptist Church, sang in the choir, was a Church deacon, and became President of the Ottawa Baptist Women's Association.
She was active in curling in both Montreal and Ottawa and was President of the Granite Day Ladies' Curling Club of West Ottawa in 2001-2002. She travelled widely with John. Frequent visits to the U.K. and European locations were welcomed and time in North Africa, Hong Kong, China, India, and Thailand added to her keen appreciation of the human experience. She had a continuing interest in the fine arts and oil painting was an activity of particular appeal.
A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church, 140 Laurier Avenue West, at the corner of Laurier and Elgin, Ottawa at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2017, reception following. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
