Cowell - Emma Lois Doreen (née Moore)
Peacefully in her home on the Goodstown Road: Monday, February 8, 2021 in her 88th year. Beloved daughter to Robert “Willie” Moore and Agnes “Aggie” Moore (née McCullough) on a snowy October 30, 1933 at the family farm. She had an idyllic childhood on the family farm always helping with chores from haying to picking apples in their orchard.
Doreen was the younger sister of Earl Moore (Doris) and older sister to Betty Pierunek (late Patrick) and (late) Everett Moore (Ruth). Educated at S.S. #6 Marlborough Public School, Richmond Continuation High School and was the first of her family to attend post-secondary school. She was a proud graduate of Willis Business College in Ottawa. She was a dedicated civil servant, working at Agriculture Canada for 35 years.
Doreen met the love of her life, Roy Cowell at a dance at Pierce’s Corners on July 20, 1951. They dated right away then were given a gift of Moore family land when they became engaged by her dad, Robert Willie. She said they were asked to pay a dollar for the deed transfer! They were married on August 7, 1954 at St. John’s Anglican Church in Richmond. There wasn’t any power in the Church because of a wind storm so they proceeded down the aisle without music then the power suddenly came on. Doreen said that she went down the aisle twice in order to get married.
They were happily married for over sixty years.
They purchased a home by secret tender for $300. It was moved on her brother Everett’s hay wagon, travelling from Ottawa to the Goodstown Road. Over the years they added several additions to their home to make it a two storey home with an inground pool where they raised their loving family. They had a great time partying with neighbours, friends and family and enjoyed their snowmobile trips to Little Hillbilly Heaven. Having family & friends over were so important to Doreen & Roy. They were always up for a game of Euchre or playing horseshoes in their annual tournaments. We have many fond memories of those epic house parties, especially St. Patrick’s Day when we never knew who might have needed to spend the night!
Travel was an integral part of Doreen’s life; journeying with family on camping trips across Canada and through the States. Exciting overseas journeys included: Antigua, Turks and Caicos, St. Lucia, Puerto Rico, Bahamas, St. Thomas, Barbados, Ireland, Isle of Mann, England, Greece, Rhodes, Crete, Santorini, Alaska, Hawaii, and Mexico. Mom was always up for a day trip whether shopping with Lois to Ogdensburg, NY or a day trip to the casino with June.
Mom had many interests, she loved attending Country and Blue Grass Festivals with family and later with her sister Betty to local shows. One of her interests dear to her heart was Genealogy, she loved updating & building on our ever changing family tree. She was passionate about sharing our family histories of the Moore, Hills, McCullough, Mills & then working on Dad’s family with the Cowell, Ralph, Adams and Johnston trees.
Doreen was a caring and loving aunt to countless nieces and nephews over the years. Doreen was a loving sister-in-law to Reta Woods (Ken) and Betty Cowell; predeceased by Marion Moore, Edna Cowell, Norman Cowell, Mervyn Cowell (Jean), Ruby Newton (Ted), Howard Cowell (Doris), Cecil Cowell (Marg), Earl Cowell and Millie Fader (Ernie).
Doreen is survived by four children: Debbie Cowell-Burn (Dennis) of Carleton Place, Cindy Mazzoccoli (Tony) of Brampton, Bonnie Goodenough (Roger) of Quig Lake, and Brent Cowell of Richmond. Adoring “Nana” of Joe Goodenough (Samantha), Julie Goodenough, Christina Mazzoccoli (Kevin), Brandon Cowell, Robert Burn, David Mazzoccoli (Julie), Amanda Burn, Caroline Burn, and Candice Burn. Proud great-grandmother of Melanie Goodenough and Callum Jaschinski. She was much loved and will forever be in our hearts.
