David Mccaw

March 21, 1957 — March 6, 2018

Born in Gimli, Manitoba on March 21, 1957. Passed away on March 6, 2018 at the Elisabeth Bruy&egravere Hospital, Ottawa of melanoma complications. He was predeceased by his parents, the late Captain Grant Fairfield McCaw and his mother Catherine McCaw (nee Varrette). Brother of Richard McCaw, currently of San Jose California, Donald McCaw of Bellevile On, Sue Perez (nee McCaw) recently of Dominican Republic. In 1989, he married Michele Owen whom he met at Toastmasters in Montreal. Father to their adopted daughter, Alexandra McCaw, originally from Fu Lin, China. Achieving his Chemical Technologist diploma from Loyalist College, Belleville, in 1978, he then pursued a Bachelor of Engineering Science at the University of Western Ontario, in London, Ontario and graduated in 1984. As an engineer-project manager, he worked for ABB, SHL, Nortel and Avaya Networks. He was an active long-distance cyclist with the Randonneurs of Ontario completing 4 Paris-Best-Paris 1200 KM rides amongst many others. He coached Chelsea Nordics jackrabbit Nordic skiers. He was also active with Gatineau Park Natural Fitness Lab. He completed 10 Nordic ski marathons, 8 at gold level camp, 3 Boston marathons and many other running and trail running events, including the 125 KM, Harricana in Charlevoix. He volunteered at many Cancer Society Events. He retired in 2016. As a Toastmasters, he achieved Distinguished Toastmasters level and was voted president of the year for district 61 in 1991. He was generous with his support and coaching with fellow recreational athletes, including Peter Grant and Cal Mitchell. Many thanks to the staff at the Ottawa General Hospital, Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto and the Elisabeth Bruy&egravere Hospital, Ottawa. Visitation will be held at the Westboro Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 403 Richmond Rd. (at Roosevelt.) on Monday March 12, 2018 from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00 -9:00 pm. A Funeral Service will be held at Julian of Norwich Anglican Church, 7 Rossland Ave. Ottawa Ave on March 13, 2018 at 10:30 am, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers donations may be made the Canadian Cancer Society.
