Passed away peacefully on January 8, 2016 in his 87th year, after a valiant and extremely courageous battle with cancer. David has left us to be reunited with the true love of his life, best friend and wife of 50 years, Ann (nee Dalgleish) and his son Bryan. David is also predeceased by his parents William and Evelyn (nee Smith), and his brother and sister in law Arthur and Joan (nee McDermott). Dad will be deeply missed by his surviving children; son Ian (Anita), daughters Tracey Cain (Chris), Barrie Tober (Jay), and Carrie Hilborn (Scott) and daughter in-law Pat. "Gumpa" will always be cherished and adored by his 18 grandchildren; Katie, Melissa, and Sarah Lochead; Christa, Amber and DJ Lochead; Jenny, Josh, Sarah, Tricia, and Heather Cain; Laura, Andy, Nicki, and Sami Tober; Kelsey, Cameron, and Emily Hilborn; and their respective spouses/partners. He will also be remembered by 6 great grandchildren; Cameron, Zadie, Isaac, Coralie, Cassidy, Paige, and his 9 nieces and nephews. David was born in London, Ontario and after being raised in Forest, Ontario, he graduated from Royal Roads Canadian Services College in Victoria, British Columbia, and Royal Military College, and Queens University in Kingston, Ontario. While attending Queens University he earned a BSc in Electrical Engineering. He is a retired Lieutenant Commander from the Royal Canadian Navy, and after 25 years of service as an electrical officer, he continued his career working for two consulting firms in Ottawa. David was very actively involved, for over 30 years, in the Kiwanis club of Manotick, where he was honoured to hold such positions as Club President, Lieutenant Governor, and Division 13 lead for District Children's project. For the past eleven years David was an active member of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church in Winchester. Over the years he enjoyed seeing many parts of the world through his travels while in the Navy, attending Kiwanis Conventions, and taking many personal trips with family and friends. He was fondly loved and deeply respected by all who met and knew him.Our heartfelt thanks and praise go out to the staff at Orchardview on the Rideau, Manotick for all the wonderful support and care they gave Dad during his time there. Visitation will take place on Friday, January 15, 2016 at 2 pm at St-Paul's Presbyterian Church, 517 Main St W, Winchester, Ontario immediately followed by a Memorial Service at 3 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, Manotick Kiwanis Club or a charity of your choice, in David's memory, would be greatly appreciated.
