Dana (MacLean) Petrie

December 30, 1941 – March 1, 2016

At home, with her family at her side, Dana passed away on March 1, following a six-year privately endured struggle with cancer.  She was the loving wife of Bruce for 51 years, the proud mother of Shauna (David Krook), Mississauga, Sharon (Zoltan Miko), Ottawa, and Megan (Antonio Vallejo), Scarborough, and Grandma to her beloved grandchildren Saxon Efford, Zoё and Anna Miko and Deirdre and Ronan Vallejo.  She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Delilah MacLean of Lockeport, Nova Scotia, and is survived by her sisters Carolyn Howard, Liverpool, N.S., and Jane Lippa (Leonard), Castlegar, B.C., and her brother Harlow (Mac) Maclean (Connie Carter), Victoria, B.C.  She was predeceased by her brother Jerrold MacLean (Lynn), Athabaska, Alberta.

An avid reader, Dana shared her passion for literature with dear friends in her book club for forty years, and for twenty five years served as the informal librarian of City View United Church.  She was an enthusiastic gardener, and her perennial gardens will be a lasting legacy.  A master of puzzles, her day did not begin successfully without completion of the Globe and Mail’s sudoku and cryptic crossword challenges.  Her greatest pleasure, however, was sharing time with her family and friends, time that inevitably involved good food, spirited discussion, much laughter and fiercely competitive board games.

As a nurse, mother, grandmother and committed volunteer worker in her church and community, Dana devoted her life to caring for others.   She was genuinely concerned with the well-being of not only her family and friends, but of those in her community and around the world who were in need of words of encouragement or material assistance.  In this spirit, she greatly admired the work of the Stephen Lewis Foundation, and asked that those who wish to make memorial tributes consider this organization.

Friends may call at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Road, Nepean, on Friday, March 4, from 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will be held at City View United Church, 6 Epworth Ave., Nepean on Saturday, March 5 at 11:00 a.m.  Tributes, condolences and donations may be made at www.tubmanfuneralhomes.com
