Charles Mackie

April 4, 1928 — February 20, 2022

Westboro Chapel

Much loved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away on February 20th in his 94th year.

Missing him greatly is first and foremost his wife of 73 years, Lillian, who he claimed he fell in love with at first sight on a blind date.  His children Brenda (Gus) Engbretson, Bruce (Connie) Mackie, Brian (Faye) Mackie also feel the hole left by his passing. He was an affectionate grandfather who greatly enjoyed grandchildren Andrew, Sarah, Heather, Lauren and Phillip - even when they misbehaved. Charles was born in Ottawa to Annie and Augustus Mackie.  Besides his parents, Charles was predeceased by his brothers Albert, John and Frederick and sister Marion. He defied all predictions including his own and was truly the last man of his generation still standing. Although he suffered from a variety of illnesses in later life, he fought hard and took pride in proving many doctors wrong when they told him that the end was near. His wry smile and quick wit were never lost.

Charles spent his entire life in the Ottawa area.  With his keen eye for colour and style and his charm as a salesman he became a successful drapery decorator who plied his talents with several different local businesses during a 45-year career. In retirement, he became an accomplished cook and baker and enjoyed sharing his recipes with others often over a good glass of wine.  As an an avid gardener his lawn was always the envy of the neighbourhood.  Charles was also an avid Sens fan which was both a source of winter diversion and frustration. Charles’ greatest material joy was his White Lake cottage. He took a humble fishing shack and designed and built, with the help of his sons, a magnificent summer home that was enjoyed by many family members and friends.  Charles will be missed by his family but will live on through the many happy memories of time spent with him.
