Brown, Cecil RCN Capt.

June 27, 1926 — April 14, 2025

Fondly known as Brownie, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2025. He had a long journey through life ending just two months shy of his 99th birthday, outliving all of his friends and most of his siblings. He was born to Peter and Anne Brown of Swift Current, Saskatchewan. He was the oldest of three brothers Reginald, Lloyd, Clinton and his four sisters Beatrice, Ramona, Frances and Shirley. Dad was kind, generous, always smiling, was witty and never complained. He loved helping family and friends in any way he could. A man of honour and integrity.

Brownine grew up during the Great Depression and proudly served his country in the Royal Canadian Navy during the end of the Second World War and during the Korean conflict. In 1945 Brownie volunteered for the war in the Pacific and brought home both the HMCS Crusader and HMCS Crescent to Canada. He became a naval photographer and was promoted up through the ranks. He served on the HMCS Bonaventure, his favorite aircraft carrier, Destroyer HMCS Nootka and HMCS Athabasca. Working for the Armed Forces as an entertainment director Brownie travelled many times around the world. After retiring from the Navy, he continued his career with the Department of Defense. Brownie was a proud member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and had the honour of being the Grandmaster in 1991. In his spare time, Dad loved gardening, growing fresh vegetables in his rather large gardens. He also enjoyed watching the NHL and cheering his favorite hockey team the Ottawa Senators with Mom in the family home. Once retired Dad and Mom travelled several times a year to Kelowna to go on adventures with his sister Frances (Harry).

Brownie met Dorothy known as Buddy, the love of his life of 70 years in Halifax.

Dad will be dearly missed by his wife Dorothy and daughters Cathy (Kevin, grandchildren Jeremy and Alexi, great grandchildren Aoife, Isla, Lilith) and Leslie (Sloan, grandchildren Quinn and Reese).

God called your name so gently,

That only you could hear.

No one heard the footsteps,

Of the angels drawing near.

Softly from the shadows,

There came a gentle call.

You closed your eyes,

And went to sleep,

And quietly left us all.

Thank you to Dr, Comerton and staff at Perley Health for the care of Brownie during his last two years.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Perley Health.
