Gibson, Catherine
Catherine “Cap” (Port) Gibson passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 9, 2019, in her 101st year. She was the daughter of Charles and Eva (Hunt) Port of Westboro, Ottawa, Ontario Predeceased by her brother, John C. Port. Beloved wife of F/L John Beatty “Jack” Gibson of Saltcoats, SK (1914-2007). Their family travelled across Canada and Europe with the RCAF. Cap was a long-time member of the Talent Guild and Altar Guild at All Saints Westboro. She and Jack enjoyed lawn bowling and socializing at the Highland Park club, and kept active visiting friends, hosting parties and family gatherings, and traveling to sunny places. Cap was known to write humorous poems for every occasion, and she kept sharp doing crosswords. She had a lifelong interest in politics and liked to follow parliamentary news.
Her loving friendship will be greatly missed by her three children: Margaret “Peggy” (Sam White) in Mebane, NC; Scott (Tracy Carefoot) in Chelsea, QC; Catherine “Cathy” (Mark Whitcombe) in Orangeville, ON. Cap was a special Granny to her 9 grandchildren— Julia, Rebecca, David, Samuel, Grace, Anne, Gillian, Max and Emma; also loved by her 12 great grand-children Eva, Zane, Nell, Katherine, Emily, Jeff, Peter, Collin, Charlie, Natalie, Elijah and Leo. Auntie Cap will be fondly remembered by her many dear nieces and nephews. Many of her extended family and friends joined Cap in Ottawa last summer to celebrate her 100th birthday and a life lived with grace and cheerfulness. She will be missed by the residents and wonderful staff at Park Place Retirement Residence, where she was lovingly treated like family for over 16 years. Caregivers from St. Elizabeth also contributed greatly to her care and comfort.
Visitation will be held in the Chapel of All Saints, Westboro on September 13, 2019 from 9:30 -10:30 AM. A funeral service will begin at 10:30 AM, followed by a Reception and light refreshments. Interment to follow at 1:30 PM at St. Mark’s Anglican Cemetery, Pakenham, Ontario. Cap will finally rest beside her dear husband Jack, alongside her parents and grandparents. In lieu of Flowers, donations may be made to All Saints Westboro Anglican Church Memorial Fund, 347 Richmond Road Ottawa Ontario K2A 0E7.
