It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Bruce Hutchinson, of Calabogie Ontario, lovingly surrounded by his family at Hospice Renfrew, after a brave battle with pancreatic cancer.
He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Anne (Gillan) and their two daughters, Katie Hogan (Nick), and Kristen Young (Ryan). Bruce was a beloved “Boppa” to the Fab 5 grandchildren, Jack and Sam Hogan and Teagan, Peyton and Bennett Young. He will be missed by his loving sister Beth Hutchinson-Neil (Gary) and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents John and Edith Hutchinson, and his brother Brian Hutchinson (Kim).
Following in the footsteps of his father and uncle, Bruce had a fulfilling career of 31 years with Bell Canada. Beginning with telephone poles and in-home repair, Bruce worked the majority of his career in marketing and Enterprise Solutions project management. Bruce utilized his DYI skills by pursuing a post-retirement career with Rona, working the special orders desk teaching many people how to build decks and fences.
Bruce will be forever remembered for his contributions to the Canadian Ski Patrol System over 36 years and was inducted as Life Member #55. Bruce was patrol leader at both Edelweiss Valley and Mount Pakenham, where he built the patrol from 6 members to over 40 in the early 1980s. Bruce finished his Ski Patrol career at Calabogie Peaks, where he was patrol leader for 17 years. Bruce was a quiet but influential leader, creating a culture of fun and strong teamwork. Bruce and Anne raised their daughters in the Ski Patrol shack and made many lifelong friends.
Bruce’s passion for volunteering provided him with many adventures, including travelling to Vancouver as a first-aid provider for the 2010 Olympics as well as serving with the Township of Greater Madawaska Fire Department.
Most of all, Bruce will be remembered as the best husband, brother, Dad and Boppa. His strong sense of family values have been carried on to his children and their families. He was his family’s greatest cheerleader in everything they did and always enjoyed participating in skiing, swimming and watersport adventures. Bruce was a legendary boat driver and taught countless people how to waterski, including his grandchildren. He will forever be present at the cottage on Black Donald Lake.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Calabogie Community Centre in the spring. If desired, a donation can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Hospice Renfrew in his name, with thanks for the compassionate care provided.
As our patrol leader would say, “Boots Off”.
