In Loving Memory of Berhe Hagos

Born on November 21, 1958 in Zata, Tigray, Ethiopia, Berhe Hagos embarked on a remarkable journey that touched the lives of many. On May 31, 2023, he peacefully passed away, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, compassion, and unwavering dedication to his community and loved ones.

Berhe's life was marked by a profound sense of purpose and an unyielding commitment to his principles. Fleeing his homeland as a refugee in 1978, he sought solace in Sudan until 1980 and later found a new home in Germany until 1986. Ultimately, he settled in Ottawa, Canada, where he embraced the vibrant atmosphere of the Byward Market for nearly 30 years as a proud business owner.

Throughout his life, Berhe was an advocate for justice, equality, and truth. His deep connection to the people of Tigray, Ethiopia, spurred him to serve as a soldier and later transition into a vocal champion for their rights. With unwavering determination, he tirelessly fought for the well-being of his fellow Tigrayans, striving to uplift their voices and shed light on their struggles.

As we bid farewell to a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, we find solace in the knowledge that his legacy of compassion, justice, and dedication will endure. In this time of grief, let us celebrate the remarkable life of Berhe Hagos and honor his legacy by carrying forward the torch of justice and compassion that he lit.

An Ethiopian Orthodox ceremony will take place on Saturday, June 10 beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Church of St. Barnabas located at 70 James St. Ottawa, ON K1R 5M3. All are welcome to join. Berhe will be laid to rest in his birthplace of Zata.   In lieu of flowers we are asking for support in repatriating Berhe to his birthplace of Zata, Tigray, Ethiopia.
