It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Barbara Grace (Darker) Magee in Osgoode, Ontario at the age of 95, with her loving family by her side. Barbara is survived by her children Jane (Ken), Peter (Anne), and Colin (Michele) and her grandchildren, Blair and Maryn. She is predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Glen Magee.
Barbara was born in Cookshire, Quebec, on May 10, 1929 to Grace and Alfred Darker. She grew up in the Eastern Townships which always held a special place in her heart.
After completing her schooling, Barbara moved to Montreal for work and there, met her husband, Glen. They married February 19, 1955 and began a life that would take them from Montreal to Toronto and finally, Edmonton where they lived until 2019 when they relocated to Manotick, Ontario. Barbara was very proud of her work in Montreal and later in Edmonton, but raising her children really was her career and focus during her lifetime which made her such a wonderful mother.
Barbara treasured her summers at the cottage on 16 Island Lake in the Laurentians where she took pleasure in the activities of her children. Barbara was a caring, thoughtful, and generous person who had a beautiful heart full of joy and warmth. Her smile and laughter were daily sunshine to her children who felt incredibly lucky to have such an amazing mother. A talented cook and baker, Barbara hosted wonderful dinner parties for family and friends. She loved gardening and was quietly proud of her plants and flowers she grew at home and at the lake. Throughout her life, Barbara was an active member and volunteer at her church, a commitment that was very important to her. She had a strong faith and loved her study group where she met many dear friends. One of Barbara’s loves was playing bridge. She played weekly, if not several times a week. Barbara was very accomplished at the game and it was a huge part of her life.
Perhaps her greatest gift was the donation of her body to the Research Department, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Ottawa.
Barbara’s last three years were spent at the Osgoode Care Centre where she received excellent care. Heartfelt thanks to the kind and caring staff, nurses, doctors and PSW’s. Barbara will be dearly missed and her memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
A service will be held at Saint James Anglican Church in Manotick early in the New Year. Please check the Tubman Funeral Homes website for details at a later date.
