Audrey June Whitfield

Audrey passed away peacefully at Carleton Lodge, Ottawa on Oct 17, 2024 at the age of 94. Beloved mother of Michael Fitzpatrick (Mary) of Toronto, Brian Fitzpatrick (Lynn) of Halifax and Leigh Fitzpatrick (Peter Evans) of Florida. Cherished grandmother of Sean (Amy Holwell) and Chris Fitzpatrick, Curtis (Jamie) and Erin Evans. Great grandmother to Emma Evans. Predeceased by grandson Taylor Evans (2000). Stepmother to Linda, Janet and Glen Whitfield.

Audrey was born and raised in Ottawa, by her parents, Alice and Sam Cuff. Audrey completed high school at Ottawa’s Glebe High School and then took legal secretary training. Shortly after embarking on her secretarial career, Audrey met Taylor Fitzpatrick. After getting married Taylor took a job in Kitchener, Ontario and the couple moved there for a couple of years. Both had an interest in returning to the Ottawa area to be closer to family and friends, and decided to move to Arnprior, Ontario where they would start their family. With Taylor’s work, Audrey was lucky enough to live at times in Scotland, Mexico and Brazil before returning to Arnprior. Taylor and Audrey separated and Audrey returned to Ottawa where she started working on Parliament Hill as Administrative Assistant for a Member of Parliament from Nova Scotia. While living in Ottawa, Audrey met Dave Whitfield. They married and had 20 years of many adventures.

Audrey was an avid reader, often having multiple books underway at any one time. She would occasionally start a book, read the last couple of pages before deciding whether to continue with the book. She didn’t like sad endings and didn’t want to read it if it was going to make her sad. Audrey was also an avid crossword puzzler, and was able to pull out seemingly obscure facts very helpful in trivia games and crosswords. She was one “smart cookie”!

Audrey had many great friends throughout her life, and their regular parties together were legendary. Audrey had a joy for life, and lived it fully until she was unfortunately impacted by Alzheimers Disease, which ultimately claimed her life. Audrey was a gentle, joyful and fun-loving soul who is leaving behind her three children and their spouses and four grandchildren who will forever have loving memories of her, her frozen cookies, her funny sayings and her unconditional love.

Rest peacefully Audrey. You deserve the rest after your long battle.

A family celebration of Audrey’s life will be held in the future.

Audrey’s family would like to express their deep appreciation to the staff at Carleton Lodge, for their kindness and exceptional care of Audrey, and all other residents in their care. The many years that Audrey was suffering from the horrible deterioration from Alzheimers was made somewhat easier, knowing she was daily being given the respect and care she deserved.Canadian Cancer Society

Audrey was passionate about canvassing for the Canadian Cancer Society and would have encouraged everyone to donate.
