Art Campbell
March 23, 1925 - September 3, 2021
After a long and wonderful life, Arthur James Campbell died peacefully in the Amica Retirement Home, aged 96. Art was born March 23, 1925 and was the youngest of four children. His early years were spent on a farm in Manitoba, but the farm was lost during the Great Depression. Art’s opportunities in Manitoba were limited, but the second World War allowed Art to leave Manitoba by enlisting at age 17 (he convinced his mother to sign the required parental permission form). Art trained as a pilot and ferried aircraft overseas in the final year of the war.
After the war, Art obtained a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Toronto, and he re-enlisted in the RCAF after graduation. During the next 25 years Art and family were posted to bases across Canada and the US, with a final posting to Ottawa where the family remained after Art retired in 1975.
In retirement, Art began a 40-year relationship with the Gatineau Park. In fall, winter and spring, Art spent endless hours hiking, cycling and skiing in the Gatineau hills. In the summer he could be found windsurfing and playing tennis on the Manitoulin Island. While hiking and cross-country skiing in the Gatineau Park, Art often acted as leader and guide for the "Wednesday Walkers”. This group relied upon Art’s expert knowledge of the Park to show them the trails less travelled, but often complained that Art’s routes were uphill from the time they left the parking lot until the time they returned.
Art’s greatest love was for his wife, Ida (nee Barrington). Art and Ida were married for 57 years, raised two children together, and were ahead of their time in that Ida returned to work upon Art’s retirement, while Art took over the household duties and became an excellent cook.
Art will be sorely missed by his children Lindsay (John) and Ross (Janet), his grandchildren Jay (Hillary), Mary (Mike) and Leslie (Mat), and great grandsons, Charlie and Jamie.
Thanks to Amica Westboro staff who provided kind and compassionate care especially as Art’s health deteriorated. Their care and support was exceptional. Our deep appreciation also goes to Veterans Affairs for their help during Art’s final year. In lieu of flowers, should you wish to make a donation, please donate to a charity of your choosing.
In memory of Art Campbell, may all your hikes lead uphill.
