BALKOVEC, Anica (nee Stajdohar)
Ana departed her loving family peacefully at St Patrick’s Home on Christmas Eve, December 24, in her 80th year. Predeceased by her beloved Janez (2002), with whom she arrived in Canada as a refugee in 1958. Poor but free, together they built a secure and happy life filled with an abundance of true riches: faith, family and friends. Dear mother of George (Dale) and Maryane Derouin (Ron). Cherished Nanny of Adam (Aviva), Joel, Noah, Kelsey (Dara) and Jacob, and Great-Nanny of Kayden and Amelia. Predeceased by her grandson Jonathan, as well as siblings Amalija, Janez and Mimica of Slovenia. Survived by her sister Cilka (Rudi) and family of Toronto, and the many friends gathered from each age and stage of her life. These will remember the great energy, zeal and creativity Ana applied to home, garden, kitchen, crafting and legendary celebrations, as well as the determination with which she persisted as Parkinson’s diminished her abilities and moved her between five homes in the last four years. Never diminished were her fierce love and loyalty, and quick, sharp sense of humour. Friends may call at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Road, Nepean, on Thursday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 pm. Mass of Christian Burial from St. Maurice Roman Catholic Church, 4 Perry Street (at Meadowlands) on Friday at 11 am, followed by a reception at which we hope to share the stories of Ana’s life. Interment to follow at Pinecrest Cemetery. On Ana’s behalf, the family expresses our deep appreciation to all who helped care for her so well in her final years, and especially to the staff of Kerry House at St. Patrick’s Home. In Ana’s memory, donations to Parkinson Canada (Ottawa) or St. Patrick’s Home Foundation would be appreciated.
