Alfreda May Aiken

In loving memory of Alfreda May Aiken (nee Dorey), who passed away in Ottawa on May 2, 2021.  Cherished wife of William (Bill) Aiken (predeceased 1981).  Beloved mother of Evelyn (Howard) Stewart and John Aiken.  Treasured grandmother to Ken, Bonnie, Curtis and Michael.  Remembered with love as Gramma-Great by Lily, Caroline, Emma and Ian.

Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on March 21, 1916, Alfreda was predeceased by her parents Lewis and Alfreda (nee Sharpe) Dorey and her brothers and sisters Harold, Hazel and Muriel Whynott, and Frederick and John Dorey.

Gramma Great lived through many historical events, including the Halifax Explosion, World War I, the Great Depression and World War II, growing to become a strong, resolute woman.  Her spirit enabled her to persevere in her ever-changing world, living with her husband in many remote areas, including amongst polar bears in Churchill, Manitoba and wild horses on Sable Island.  Her life was filled with adventures and her stories were captivating.

Gramma Great was a long-time resident of Nepean and worked at Sears for many years.  She was an avid bridge player and belonged to the Merivale United Church.  She enjoyed spending her free time in the garden with her flowers, or simply sitting on the veranda, watching the birds and bunnies scampering about.  Her family was precious to her and she often said she was the richest person in the world because of them.

Gramma Great will be remembered as the sweet, kind-hearted lady she was by those who had the fortune to know her.  A special thank you to the wonderful girls from Carefor and Bayshore Home Health for their care and compassion.
